Spring
A spring day at Aspen Highlands
The best spring skiing I ever skied was mid-winter in Australia, where the sun burns
so big and so close you could scorch your glove on it. Dead winter Down Under teaches
you how to really ski slush, how to carve a turn like you’d swirl a spoon through soft
vanilla ice cream… and how to look really good doing it.
Skiing Oz also teaches you how to crack an egg over a hamburger, how to roll rubber
gloves over soaked, under-waterproofed ski gloves, and a lot of other questionably
useful things, too. But most of all, it lets you experience endless spring skiing.
Spring skiing means different things to different skiers. People talk about catching
rays and a few brews on Temple Beach at Lake Louise. Skiing those bizarre but
incre dibly cool machine-made moguls at Ontario’s private ski clubs. Scoring the best
patio table — or any table — at Whistler’s Longhorn or GLC. Or simply kickin’ back
in a sun chair listening to the sound of icicles dripping onto an Aspen deck... or any
deck anywhere in the world’s alpine.
But most of all, it lets you
experience endless spring skiing.
Me, I think of that woman I shared an outdoor lunch with one spring day on Red
Mountain. I watched her through my shades as she methodically drew cheese, baguette,
grapes and water from her lunchbag. She peeled an apple, then skewered, spread and
ate nearly everything with her jackknife. She packed ‘em all neatly back into her MEC
pack, slung it on her back, snapped into her teles and danced down into the glow of
Red’s afternoon sun. Lunch — and spring skiing — never looked so good.
I say, bring on spring.
